Thermal Processing Applications
Thermal processing is typically a two-phase product with an aqueous phase and an oil phase. The oil phase is a mixture of melted waxes and oils with dry ingredients that are soluble in the oil. The aqueous phase preparation typically involves the addition and dispersion of gum thickeners and stabilizers, which requires high shear mixing to properly hydrate these ingredients.
The two phases are heated to temperature in separate containers and then homogenized together in a processor to form a stable emulsion. While mixing and proper shear application are key elements of thermal processing products, thermodynamics and crystallization rates also play an important role. Some products, such as lipsticks and mascaras, need to be filled into the final container hot so that the product flows and takes the shape of the mold, while other products, such as creams and serums, need to be cooled with gentle agitation to prevent the product from separating or crystallizing. Proper mixing and precise temperature control are essential for successful thermal processing.
